Joan has provided counselling for marriage, family and individual concerns for over twenty years. She offers conflict resolution and mediation for couples and families who are experiencing relationship difficulties, reconstructing their marriage after an affair, dealing with separation issues, or desiring to improve parent – child relationships. Joan also works with individuals who are dealing with depression, anxiety, loss, trauma recovery or assault/abuse experiences.
Joan’s approach depends upon the situation presented, and includes a variety of therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, brief solution-focused therapy and dynamic family therapy. Client strengths are emphasized with personal insight and responsibility for growth encouraged.
Joan received her doctoral degree from the Southern California University for Professional Studies with her dissertation research focusing on factors which contribute to resilience in adversity. She received her Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology from the University of Saskatchewan, followed by two years of specialized clinical training in Chicago. Joan is registered with the College of Psychologists of BC and is a member of the Canadian Psychological Association.
Joan enjoys teaching in community, educational and retreat settings on topics related to her areas of practice. Having been married for twenty-seven years, with four children, her approach to relationship issues is realistic and practical.
